In this course I teach the approach used by most police negotiators the world over including the Metropolitan Police, Police Scotland, NYPD and the FBI. Exploring some of the key components of human emotion and dignity as a precursor to developing skills in empathy, building rapport and managing crisis, this course provides a solid foundation for counselling, business negotiation, conflict management and personal development. There is role-play throughout this course.

Day Two option - Crisis Management
Peer-support is an essential aspect of good mental health and wellbeing in our lives and developing our ability to deal with emotion and willingness to reach out to each other in times of need is critical for our future happiness. This course over one day looks at a value-based approach to peer-support with human dignity at the heart of the learning. We develop an understanding of our differences and our similarities as peers, building on that knowledge to improve how we interact and provide support in times of need.

This course builds upon development listening skills and applies a model for crisis management. The key outcomes from this course is to allow the candidates to be able to assess and mange their own and others' personal safety and, if required, de-escalate a crisis until professional support arrives. The course borrows signifciantly from the professional negotiator's playbook in applying a structured approach to crisis and using active listening skills. An extended role-play with fairly sensitive topics forms part of this course.

This 1-day course incorporates the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan and covers ways in which a positive mental health culture can be supported within a workplace. It is delivered through nucotraining and includes a copy of the first aid for mental health manual and e-certificate on successful completion. It has the following key lessons:
